Good morning! Today, on The Meter, we will cover Kamala Harris' upcoming vice-presidential pick. The momentum seemed to be with Gov. Josh Shapiro, of Pennsylvania, whose popular within the Commonwealth, which is a pivotal battleground state, with 19 Electoral Votes. However, since his name was mentioned, opposition is growing amongst some in the Democrat Party. Film maker Michael Moore has lambasted  Shapiro, who is Jewish, for his support for Israel. Moore, who has much influence in another important swing state, Michigan, has called the Israeli war effort in Gaza genocide and is urging Harris to choose someone else. Michigan is home to Rashida Talib, a Muslim, a  Palestinian-American who has always criticized Israel. Without Michigan's 15 Electoral College votes, Harris' chances are slim. Others include Mark Kelly, Tim Walz, and Peter Buttigieg. Who will Kamala Harris select for the ticket? Also, the Biden administration negotiates a deal that secured the release of American hostages being held in Russia. The Americans were swapped for Russian prisoners in the US who were serving time for assassinations, cyber hacking, and spying. Donald Trump praised the freed hostages but also criticized the weakness of Biden/Harris for the heavy price paid. This came as Biden/Harris announced that the death penalty would be off the table for 9-11 masterminds still held at GITMO. They've since recanted the offers. Was this deal good for America's foreign relations? Also, the Israeli-Hamas war is expanding as Israel seemed to be behind the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran this week. How the strike was carried out remains. The Iranians are saying it was a projectile while others say a bomb was planted at the house where Haniyeh was staying. Iran has vowed retaliation.
