    Triumph Over Tremors

    in Health

As a former college athlete, sales executive, and father of two, I thrived on living life to the fullest until a "nervous tick" in my left arm led to a life-changing diagnosis of young onset Parkinson's Disease in 2016 at age 42.
The tick developed into a severe tremor affecting my left side, causing constant pain, embarrassment, and a sharp decline in my quality of life. I struggled with daily activities and business meetings, and intense situations like coaching my son’s basketball games became nearly unbearable.
In 2020, I discovered a clinical trial for Focused Ultrasound, a promising new tremor treatment. Thanks to a supportive employer and a dedicated medical team at the University of Pennsylvania, I underwent this transformative therapy in June 2022.
On June 9, 2022, I traveled to the University of Pennsylvania filled with hope but anxious about the procedure. During the MRI, I experienced intense physical and emotional strain. However, after the third sonication, I felt my tremors cease and my muscles relax for the first time in years. It was a profound moment of relief and stillness.
Since then, I’ve shared my Parkinson’s journey and Focused Ultrasound experience at Capitol Hill, Princeton University, and Rock Steady Boxing. These encounters have shown me the hope my story brings but also highlighted the challenges many face in accessing this treatment. This realization led to the creation of the Be Still Foundation to address these issues and support others in need. https://www.bestill.foundation

A Healing Journey from Chaos to Calm

    in Health

In this episode, Dr. David Hanscom talks with Vanessa Blackstone, a therapist and Executive Director of the Pain Psychology Center. She candidly discusses her tumultuous childhood, entering foster care at a young age, and the normalization of the chaos in her life. She talks about how chaos came to feel comfortable and how she later learned that her brain created chaos as a way for her to feel comfortable. This came through her migraines, emotional distress and compulsive thoughts. When she became a therapist and discovered Pain Reprocessing Therapy she applied it to her own situation and began to heal.
Vanessa Blackstone, ACSW, a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Nation, is the Executive Director of the Pain Psychology Center. She earned her M.S. in Social Work from the University of Southern California. After overcoming chronic pain herself, Vanessa became a therapist in 2018. She specializes in chronic pain treatment, sex therapy, substance use recovery, mindfulness-based relapse prevention, and works as an Onset Wellness Professional. Vanessa, a former foster youth, advocates for foster youth by sharing her experiences at public speaking events. She is the author of the forthcoming book, The Pain Reprocessing Therapy Workbook, to be released in November 2024. For more information, visit: https://painpsychologycenter.com

Part 1: Close Up Radio Spotlights Dr. Chukwudi Ogbolu MD

    in Caregiving

Easton, PA - After almost a decade of enduring the challenges of private practice—including pre-authorization hassles, insurance complications, and overhead costs—Dr. Chukwudi Ogbolu discovered a niche solution that significantly enhances the quality of care for the geriatric population.
In his role as Medical Director and attending physician at a local nursing facility, Dr. Ogbolu is happy with the percentages, offering 60% skilled nursing and 40% long-term care.
Dr. Ogbolu’s transition from private practice to a nursing home setting has been transformative. On the skilled nursing side, there’s high patient turnover, which brings in diverse cases and keeps the work environment dynamic. Conversely, the long-term care side allows Dr. Ogbolu to build lasting relationships with his patients, akin to his experience in private practice. This dual approach ensures that patients receive comprehensive, individualized care.
“Compared to private practice, the facility provides the office space, staff, medication, and testing,” Dr. Ogbolu shares. “It also reduced my practice overhead, in addition to making to making my revenue more predictable.”
Dr. Ogbolu is part of a shifting trend in nursing homes, where having attending physicians on staff is becoming the norm. “In the past, nursing homes did not have medical doctors on staff. Today, patients arrive with an average of 27 medications. For example, a patient wit a knee injury will need physical therapy. We can’t do physical therapy until the patient is medically stable. Having an attending physician is increasingly a necessity,” Dr. Ogbolu notes.
